I’ve always had a yearning to learn foreign languages, and I don’t know where that came from. As far as I remember, I started to learn English because I really wanted to know what Sesame Street characters were talking about. It was around when I was nine or ten, I think. Back then, Sesame Street was aired only in English on a Japanese educational channel, and they sold the transcripts as a monthly magazine or something like that. Naturally, the more I grew and learned English, the less interest I had in them. But they are still my old friends, just like everyone else I grew up with. Now I understand what they are talking about in English. And now I understand why people said Ernie and Bert’s relationship was questionable. Whatever that is, I have always been all for those two, and I always will be.

Just before I went to bed, an earthquake alarm went off. We receive a maximum-volume alarm on our smartphones when a large earthquake is expected. I quickly opened the door to secure the exit, but the shaking wasn’t that big in my area. I kept checking the news. The screen was full of horizontal and vertical characters. It was a cold night. I felt sorry for the people in the affected area. I exchanged some messages and went to bed. There was no way I could sleep soundly.

The meteorological agency announced that there might be another big earthquake. I went to the gas station and the supermarket in the morning to stock up, just in case. The memory of the huge earthquake that happened in 2011 is still vivid.

If I were a character from Sesame Street, I would probably be a cross between Snuffy and Elmo. I’m your imaginary, introverted, and hyper-curious fluffy friend. Glad you found me.
