Letter #27: kapustin, offline love, purple shake

a flower of Azalea

Sunday, May 4
I stayed in to avoid the crowds of Golden Week. I didn’t even want to go grocery shopping, so I cooked with what was in the fridge and freezer. I like having this “make-do” day once or twice a week.

I watched a series my younger friend recommended. I’ve never watched a reality TV show, and I hesitated initially, but I’m glad I did (thanks). It was about 10 young Japanese people trying to find each other and love on a 10-day Southern France trip without digital devices. Traveling without smartphones must already be an adventure.

Tuesday, May 6
It was a cold, rainy day. I found a cheesecake in the freezer.

grimace shake

Wednesday, May 7
Golden Week is over, and the streets have become quiet. I went to the farmer’s market and bought a biryani lunchbox from a local Indian restaurant. It was too spicy, so I added onions and bell peppers and made it into fried rice.

I’ve been wondering what I would do if I were one of the participants in that TV show. I think I would write a letter to everyone on Day 1, talk with everyone on Day 2, and go off the radar from Day 3 onward.

I decided to pick my all-time favorite music albums. I thought 5 or 10 would be nice, but after thinking about it for 3-5 minutes, I decided that I should first list all the albums I love. This is such a fun activity.

Saturday, May 10
I walked past the pet and animal section in the mall. There was a baby buncho (java sparrow) bird that was the same color as Goma. For a brief second, I thought, “If I put this bird into our cage, my nephew would believe Goma has returned…” But he’s not Goma. I prayed this baby bird would find a happy home.

This week’s track:
Nikolai Kapustin – Eight concert etudes Op. 40 Prelude
