Week 27: ‘We share spreadsheets, not bedsheets’ (sorry, I forgot who said this first)

fields

Sunday, September 28
We’ve been hearing a lot of news about bears this year. I wish we could just sit down with their representatives at a community center to talk things out and prevent conflicts on both sides.

Representative of Humans: So, how’s the food supply situation in your woods?

Representative of Bears: Not good. The acorn harvest was poor this year. We’ve got a few families with newborns, so there won’t be enough acorns to get through the autumn.

Human Rep: I see. Look, we really don’t want you to cross the road to find more food—it’s dangerous for both of us. Mrs. A has offered to share some persimmons from her trees with you. You know her fields? She said you can eat the fruits on the left side.

Bear Rep: Oh, how kind of her! We’d love to thank her in person, but we don’t want to startle her. Will you give her our best regards?

a bell

Monday, September 29
I had something to do in the woods today. I set up a dog-barking sound and brought a bell with me.

Tuesday, September 30
I went to see a movie with my mom. One of the theater staff helped me buy the tickets and smoothly picked the best seats for us.

autumn evening sky

Saturday, October 2
A female mayor in our prefecture has been accused of going to a love hotel with her married male colleague. She explained that he’s been a good mentor of hers for years and that they’re not in a romantic relationship. The reason they used the love hotel, she said, was that she needed a safe place to air out and cry aloud.

Three things came to mind when I heard this story. The first was, “Lucky you have an office spouse you can trust that much.” The second was, “Aside from her home or a hotel room, is there any other place in the city where a mayor can cry aloud safely?” And the third one—I choose not to share publicly.
